Join us on this week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Dr. Joshua Batchelor speaks to us on a wealth of knowledge, not only as an educational leader, but the need for educational reform to meet the needs and demands of black and brown students across the globe. Dr. Batchelor is currently the leader of a network of charter schools in the southeast.
During the podcast, Dr. Batchelor shares his experience that led him to have a passion for education and a strong belief in the need for every student to have a quality educational experience. Dr. Batchelor has several responsibilities in education from driving buses to driving change. His experiences, knowledge, and maturity make him an impeccable leader for and of educational reform and he is only beginning. He shares the importance of engaging all stakeholders in supporting and prioritizing education as well as the aspects needed to be a progressive and effective educational leader. This success includes increasing teacher capacity, having an intentional focus on student achievement, and establishing collaborative relationships with the communities being served. Dr. Batchelor has goals to expand his reach beyond continental shores but stretch to other students in other continents.
Dr. Batchelor earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education with a specialization in reading from University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a Master of Education in instructional and educational leadership from Argosy University and a Doctor of Education degree in educational and organizational leadership from the American College of Education.

Join us on this week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Rev. Dr. Ingrid Hayes-Burrell. Rev. Dr. Hayes-Burrell speaks to us on the topics of pursuing your passion and taking risks. Rev. Dr. Hayes-Burrell is a Project Manager in the Project Management Office, Member Supervision Department, of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) located in Washington, D.C. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Global Health Services Department at University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) in Adelphi, Maryland, Adjunct Professor in Health Services Department at University of the Potomac in Washington, DC, as well as a Lecturer in the School of Business in the Department of Management at Howard University. Additionally, she is the President of Eagle Cardinal, LLC, a consulting services and product development corporation, a dissertation editor, and the author of three books.
During the podcast, Rev. Dr. Burrell shares what motivated her to pursue her doctorate degree, the influence of her parents, her love for helping others, and how she balances work, family life, her pastoral work, and many other activities. She also discusses her work as a Project Manager and how she navigates working with diverse groups and individuals as the lead person responsible for ensuring the successful completion and implementation of multiple projects with various companies and organizations.
Rev. Dr. Hayes-Burrell is a native Baltimorean. She is a graduate of the International Business College, where she majored in Executive Secretarial Science. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Potomac College, a Master of Business Administration in Organizational Management from Trinity University, and a Doctor of Business Administration with a specialization in Management from the College of Management and Technology at Walden University. In 1999, she received an Honorary Bachelor of Theology degree from the American International Theological Institute and Seminary. She became a licensed minister in 2014 and was ordained as a Reverend of the Gospel in June 2019. Rev. Dr. Hayes-Burrell is a member of Union Temple Baptist Church, Washington, DC where she serves the body of Christ as an Associate Minister and Teacher for the Omni Ministry for Children. More importantly, she is a proud wife, mother, and grandmother of four.

Join us on this week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Dr. Leona Johnson. Dr. Johnson has extensive experience working with corporate companies such as IBM, Loral, and Lockheed Martin in various positions including Senior Program Management. She began her teaching career as an Adjunct Professor at Howard University. Dr. Johnson has served as an Associate Professor, Department Chair of Psychology, and Assistant Dean in the School of Liberal Arts at Hampton University. Dr. Johnson most recently joined the Department of Psychology at Florida A & M University in 2019.
During the podcast, Dr. Johnson discusses her journey to the doctorate, which included working while being committed to completing her studies. Dr. Johnson had long expressed a passion for psychology and made a conscious decision to take her expertise to HBCUs and its students. Understanding that many students she serves are first generation college students, Dr. Johnson prioritizes the importance of a quality education and how higher education can change the trajectory of success for HBCU students. Dr. Johnson also shares how educational psychology is important to engage students and deepen teacher capacity. Awareness and professional development in educational psychology is important to increase student motivation and learning outcomes, especially due to the increased use of technology due to the nation’s COVID pandemic. With opportunities to continue to conduct research, Dr. Johnson is overjoyed by being able to grant undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to participate in research and strengthen their experiences and practical knowledge.
Dr. Johnson earned a M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Howard University, with a sub-specialty in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. She earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Strayer University. She also earned a BS in Modern Foreign Languages from Jackson State University. Dr. Johnson has mentored junior faculty and mentored many students academically and in research. Dr. Johnson is actively engaged in research and grant writing. She has authored various peer review journal articles, a book, and a book chapter. Dr. Johnson’s research interests include: classroom dynamics and the classroom learning environment (primarily from the student’s voice); factors which influence the classroom learning environment and classroom dynamics such as culture and learning; online, hybrid, and face-to-face learning, student learning preferences, and innovative teaching strategies.

Join us on this week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Dr. Kalinda Ukanwa who speaks to us on the topics of algorithmic fairness and bias and algorithmic decision-making. Dr. Ukanwa is currently in her second career. Previously she was an industrial engineer, financial analyst, and finance executive at Walt Disney, Citigroup, Viacom, and Kaplan. Currently, Dr. Ukanwa is Assistant Professor of Marketing at the University of Southern California, a quantitative modeler, and an expert in artificial intelligence.
During the podcast, Dr. Ukanwa shares his insights on the latest equity fight that those in Black and Brown communities must battle: technology. Technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI) is used to make decisions about consumers, however Dr. Ukanwa shares her legitimate concerns about the errors that occur related to AI inability to accurately identify and inform decisions for all consumers. Dr. Ukanwa shares her love for teaching and leading, but also enjoys one of the biggest advantages of being a professor, which is the ability to engage in passion work via research. She discusses how she uses research to collect data and challenge how AI can be misleading and problematic. While valuing the use and benefits of technology, Dr. Ukanwa boldly stands for equity and fairness and advocates that her colleagues from other races and cultures consider everyone in their research developments and methodology to also address those from all races, cultures, and genders.
Dr. Ukanwa was the winner of the 2018 Eli Jones Promising Young Scholar Award, a finalist for the 2018 INFORMS Service Science Best Student Paper Award. 2019 Howard/AMA Doctoral Dissertation Award, and the 2020 AMS Mary Kay Doctoral Dissertation Award. She is a wife and mother, but most importantly an intelligent and powerful woman with so much to offer the academia. Dr. Ukanwa earned a Ph.D. in Marketing (Quantitative) from University of Maryland; M.B.A., B.S. and M.S. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University.

As a young man, Dr. Wilder realized that life does not always go as planned. Knowing how to sit in silence and wait on the time to move has been a recurring theme. With hopes of having a life in the political arena, the “call” on his life led him into ministry and academia. Being the offspring of parents who ministered through service, Dr. Wilder shares how faith, leadership and higher education are often beneficially mutualistic. With growing congregations of scholars among certain denominations, leaders too must be diverse in their approach to both preach and teach. As an ordained minister, Dr. Wilder also shares his gifts as a professor where he has taught courses in Ethics, Professional Development, Political Science, Philosophy, Leadership and Spirituality, World Religions, and African American Studies as an adjunct faculty member for several colleges and universities. Dr. Wilder shares the biggest misconception and true essence of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. Wilder received his B.A. from the University of South Carolina in Political Science with a minor in Spanish, his M.Div. from the Interdenominational Theological Center, and his Ph.D. from Union Institute & University in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Ethical and Creative Leadership and a specialization in Martin Luther King, Jr. Studies. He is currently a faculty member at Newberry College. Dr. Wilder prioritizes time with his wife, Kelli, and their two sons, Douglass and Asher. He also makes time to ensure he is operating at his highest level by focusing on fitness, quiet time, and opportunities to disconnect while vacationing.

Dr. Karriem speaks to us on the topic of how to turn opposition into opportunities and creating a space to succeed, being a vessel to support others’ purpose, empowerment through representation, identity trust, and honesty, and emotional intelligence in the workplace. Dr. Karriem is a best-selling author, entrepreneur, government worker, and college professor.
During the podcast, Dr. Karriem shares how working as a government worker for decades does equate to a full-filled life. Being able to create space and opportunities has allowed her to share knowledge and serving the needs of those who are less fortunate has provided priceless moments of fulfillment. Running a family owned business that cares for adults with disabilities continues her mother’s work and has allowed her to be a willing vessel to spread love. In addition, Dr. Karriem’s work with emotional intelligence has shown how EI contributes to significant life outcomes, such as better decision making and improved learning skills. She discusses the relevance and implication of EI in the workplace among leaders considering the shift in how and where the American workforce perform their roles due to the global pandemic.
Dr. Karriem obtained her Doctorate Degree from University of Phoenix and completed her dissertation on Stress and Emotional Intelligence (EI). After becoming an aunt of two beautiful twin girls she decided to create inspiring books that teach both young and old about Emotional Intelligence, diversity, values: and those with special needs. Dr. Karriem was born and continues to live in the Chicago area.

Join us on this week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Dr. Doraine Baul-Pinson. Dr. Baul-Pinson speaks to us on the topics of mental health and mental illness, her connection with mental illness, and the lack of diversity among mental health professionals. Dr. Baul-Pinson is currently an adjunct professor at various universities. She is in private practice as a licensed independent mental health practitioner and clinical supervisor. During the podcast, Dr. Baul-Pinson shares how as a child she did not see Black professional in the mental health arena, while being exposed to family members who displayed behavior that she now understands to be mental illness. Historically in the Black community, the diagnoses of mental health and illness have not been prevalent or popular. Dr. Baul-Pinson discusses the importance of everyone, specifically Black America, seeking appropriate mental health support when needed whether it be temporary or more long term service based on the determination of a professional. She also shares the difference in her role as a clinical supervisor which supports those who desire to be a mental professional not only on the skill but also the business aspects of the work. While most of her work has involved families where parental mental health disorders proved challenging to these parents, the heaviness proved to be taxing leading her to work with military veterans in a less demanding role.
Dr. Baul-Pinson possesses a doctorate degree in Human Services with an emphasis in Counseling from Capella University. She received her master’s degree in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma, and her bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Dr. Baul-Pinson collaborates with probation services to provide counseling, education, and groups and also works on community projects such as support groups and mediation for restorative justice.

Dr. Purnell is an entrepreneur and professor who lives a fascinating life in the world of academia and entertainment.
During the podcast, Dr. Purnell shares how he would be the last person that he thought would end up in the world of academia. He provided insight into how a struggling college student who was unprepared to balance the social and academic life of postsecondary education hit the reset button and never gave up on his commitment to obtain his college degree and be a model father. With a life rooted in faith and music, Dr. Purnell seized an opportunity to connect with a mentor in the entertainment industry. That meeting led him to work with world class entertainers and made a name for himself as an entrepreneur and producer. While rubbing shoulders with the music industry’s elite, Dr. Purnell has always remained humble and maintained his desire to serve. While continuing to work on music out of his studio in Atlanta, Dr. Purnell serves as a full-time faculty member in the G. Brint Ryan College of Business at the University of North Texas where he shows up as his authentic self and shares practical, real-world experiences with his students has proven to be a great combination.
Dr. Purnell holds a doctoral degree in Business Administration. Dr. Purnell enjoys conducting academic research on various topics in the areas of entrepreneurship, management and consumer behavior. He continues to work with talented artists and musicians and produce top charting hits. In addition, Dr. Purnell enjoys spending time with his family which is his priority and motivation.
