Join us on this week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Dr. Ashley Townes

who speaks to us about sexuality education, specifically regarding black women. She
provides insight on her work as an epidemiologist researcher where she currently serves in a
postdoctoral role in Atlanta, GA. Her research focuses on Black women’s sexual experiences and
their access to sexuality information and health services. She is a blog contributor for Pure
Romance and has been featured in Cosmopolitan, Psychology Today, Madame Noire,
MindBodyGreen, Woman’s Day, a variety of podcasts, and MTV News.

During the podcast, Dr. Townes shares her insights on sexuality by differentiating between a
sexuality educator and a sexuality counselor. Dr. Townes discussed why she has an intentional
focus on the Black woman, specifically the sexual profile and stereotypes of Black women. The
interview included rich dialogue surrounding sexual identity and self esteem and why this is such
an important topic to all people despite sex, sexuality, gender, or race so that we can normalize
the conversation regarding sex. She also shares very personal stories of resilience, commitment,
and purpose as well as her journey to the doctorate. Dr. Townes is a young, gifted, and bold
women who understands her purpose to create better access and information to black and brown
communities.

Dr. Townes earned her Bachelor of Science in Health Education and Master of Public Health in
Community Education degrees from the University of Cincinnati. She later earned her doctorate
degree in Health Behavior and Epidemiology from Indiana University-Bloomington.
